the commute to work isn't bad at all. we usually take the metro 4 stops to work and walk home afterwards. The metro station is only 2 blocks away and our office building is about 10 meters away from the metro stop.
Our office is in this older building on the 4th floor. Its a decent size with a reception area, a conference room and a common space where we all work. As soon as we got to work today, we got our desks. After cleaning off the inch of dust and cleaning out the drawers that had stuff in it from 2006, the computer was finally turned on.
Using a computer with a Spanish operating system is a challenge within itself - especially when none of the shortcuts are the same (in word, Ctrl + S means save, but in Spanish operating system, its underline!). Some other challenges? I copied all my files onto my external harddrive so that i could use it at work..but the external hard drive (formatted to a mac) didnt work on my work laptop and to make things work, i didnt HAVE my files on the drive!
Although the day was off to a rocky start, it ended up being really great. I was super productive and got into a good groove and even talked to some of the members that called in.
There is El Corte Ingles across the street from our office. It is kind of like the Bay in Canada (higher end department store) but! it also has a super market in it! so we frequent the supermarket mostly for water, drinks and snacks. Its also great if you forget your lunch.
Speaking of grocieries - they are SO CHEAP! I got juice, milk, apples, nectarines, yogurt, pasta, cheese, frozen vegetables and probabaly more for 10 euros! love it
Another great thing about Madrid is the recycling here - there are bins for plastic, paper, organic and bottles and everyone does it! The downside? everynight at around 11 or 11:30pm, the garbage truck rolls down the street with bright yellow spinning lights and is SO LOUD! our bedroom is right on the street and the blacony door is always open (because of the heat) and that garbage truck is killer. even if you arent asleep..its still so over powering that all conversation is muted.

I can definitely empathize with the keyboard, my keyboard in Denmark had all the weird vowels on it, so all the symbols were in different places and I never could seem to find quotation marks...
